Regular Meetings
The Society holds two meetings a year;
our Autumn will be:
Northampton Castle
Brian Giggins MA
4th October 2008 at 2:45 pm
The Conference Suite, St Andrews
Hospital, Billing Road, Northampton
Northampton Castle was a significant
Royal fortress in the 13th century and had earthworks
rivalling those of the Castles at Castle Acre and Castle
Rising in Norfolk. Today the last vestiges of Northampton
castle are virtually unknown to the residents of the
town as so much of the castle was flattened during
the late 19th century. Using historic photographs and
the evidence of antiquarian and modern excavations,
the talk will look at the significance and development
of the Castle from the 11th century fortifications
of the Earl of Northampton & Huntingdon through
to the Civil War.
Brian Giggins has lived in the County
for over 35 years and has researched Northampton and
Towcester as well as the vernacular architecture in
the County. He is the Senior Archaeological Officer
for Milton Keynes Council and obtained an MA in Archaeology & Heritage
in 2000 with a dissertation on Northampton Castle.
As well as contributing to local journals, he has lectured
widely in the county and also conducted guided tours
as one of the county's Blue Badge Guides.
Guests may be invited to the lecture
at £2 each.
At the conclusion of the lecture, tea
and cake will be available at £2 for
those who have booked, and paid, in advance.
Application
for tickets, with a stamped addressed envelope and
remittance, must be with the Secretary
by 16th September AT THE LATEST.
The next meeting will be held in
2009.
